Museum of Illusion and Wonder
Museum of Illusion and WonderRob Kettels
In the exhibition Museum of Illusion and Wonder, artist and PhD candidate Rob Kettels reinterprets the natural history museum diorama. Through sculptural-assemblage, Kettels challenges the authority of institutional forms of knowledge and power, in the shaping of our understanding of Nature. Yet as an alternative to representing Nature as a singular and separate domain to humanity, the exhibition advocates for the interconnectedness of human and nonhuman entities, opening up possibility beyond the limitations of aesthetics and humanist privilege. Kettels working methodology emulates the museum expeditions of a by-gone era; however, rather than killing for taxidermy, he collects materials from remote and contested landscapes that hold autobiographical and ecological significance.
