Support Paper Mountain

Paper Mountain is a community-led arts and culture organisation that supports emerging artists and social practitioners in cultural change, exploratory practice and collective healing through our creative programming. We consider art practices to be inextricably tied to social change and collective healing, and we work to enable access to cultural expression for those who experience barriers of access, whether from ableism, homophobia, capitalism, patriarchy, and/or white supremacy. Our work is anti-colonial, collective, spiritual, scientific, intergenerational, intercultural, interspecial, and interdisciplinary. It is joyful, curious, and community-led.

This is a key moment for our organisation, for our arts sector, and for the world. In the midst of an ongoing global pandemic and the resurgence of the Black Lives Matter movement, a veil has been lifted. All of our organisations and systems, including those that prop up the Australian arts sector, are structured by white supremacy and ableism. Things can be made accessible. Racist acts do not have to be tolerated. So if we want to disentangle ourselves from what bell hooks refers to as white-supremacist capitalist patriarchy, we need to re-imagine what we think an arts organisation looks like.

We are attempting to shift from being a contemporary arts organisation to becoming a social change and community justice organisation that supports all forms of creative and cultural expression, and provides space to explore our linked histories and shared futures. We are transforming to help others with their transformations too.

We are asking you, if you have the means, to help us make that transformation.
